Test config Windows R2 with Hyper-V. They would time out as they passed their default pending and deadlock time-outs.

Firstly, when you online, refresh or failover a VM configuration, Hyper-V performs a sanity check to ensure the underlying components of the VM network, storage, etc are available. This means scanning all the disks.

This brought the online time from 10 minutes to 19 seconds! Result…or maybe…. I needed to fully understand the issue, so out came WireShark in order run some Ethernet traces…. Windows onwards, the default TCP acknowledge time is ms. This means that if a TCP segment bytes is not full, it may need to wait up to ms before the data actually sent from the Windows host. It does this sequentially, at least twice for each disk involved in the virtual machine.

But there are some strange issues if the vm brakes down. The qnap thinks the file is till in use and i haven't found a quick way to avoid this except rebooting the nas.

I could write. We have a on it 12 x 5To hdd. We dedicated 2 disks for hot spare. We created on all left hdds a Raid6 Volume. The purpose of this NAS is to store disk dumps that are accessed from client machines. To manage these dumps we use a windows 2k12 which access the storage via iSCSI mutlipath. Yes by To I meant TB. What do you mean by I'll loose everything? How could this happen when you do raid6 with 2 hotspare disk? Other question, regarding the perf, what is the best in speed performance? Are you using span or stripe volume? Striped volumes can corrupt files if one the LUNs in the stripe were to go offline. Block is best for performance. I'm using span and not strip mode, which according to what i understood would be less dangerous than strip and a little bit less speedy than full block mode.

I'm waiting for a hdd pack which would allow me to transit from a mode to another. I'll first bench both solutions to check if it worth it. Regards Franck. Just don't allocate all the storage pool, keep some space free in case the LUN fills up.
